SCHOOL BOXING
Sir, —It is reported that the Baptist general convention of Texas, in refusing President Truman an honorary degree, declared “we all agree that no man could be a good Baptist and drink his liquor.” In advocating a little indulgence in whisky a prominent British M.P. recently said: “I prefer strength through pleasure rather than through misery.” The Baptists prefer to differ, and Dunedin Methodists have excelled themselves in like attitude. Now comes the doleful dirge of the Rev. James Richards. In referring to himself as a fossil and a kill-joy Mr Richards is not unduly critical. A bright spot, though, is his reference to a free-for-all, which suggests that he is not averse to a quiet peek at the racing news. School boxing tournaments? Horrible! They do not fit in with your correspondent’s idea of things. It is strange that he can exaggerate these friendly bouts into a National donnybrook wherein headmasters and their assistants, parents and pupils, fancy themselves as Roman gladiators.—l am, etc., R. W. Anderson.
