GORSE ON ROADS

Sir, —The Waimate County Council discussed the matter of gorse on roads in a judicious manner at its recent meeting. The chairman has shown sympathetic consideration for farmers who should now do their best. The suggestion by Cr. Stowell to obtain a rotary hoe is a valuable one in many ways, and would probably combat the whole trouble in a year or two. I am sure that farmers would be only too glad to pay for its use. Such a machine would also be of great service in the Council’s own work. Many roadsides require working down for modern traffic. Gorse spreading on land is a serious problem. Tree planting has been suggested, but this cannot be safely undertaken in hill country as it would be necessary to have a fire break of at least a chain wide around each block.—l am, etc., Ratepayer.
