FAIRLIE WAR MEMORIAL
Public Meeting To Be Called Mrs A. H. Gillingham, president of the Fairlie Women's Institute, presided at a meeting held in the Council Chambers on Monday to consider the building of a Community Centre in Fairlie. It was thought by the Institute that such a building would also serve as a suitable war memorial. A suitable hall and meeting place was required in Fairlie. and- the suggestion that it take the form of a Community Centre was being put forward by the Women's Institute. Messrs A. J. Salt, W. F. Jones and J. A. Fraser, representing the Returned Services’ Association, said that the matter had come up for discussion at a recent meeting of the local executive. While the Association was in accord with the proposal for a memorial, it was thought that any move should be made cautiously. The County Council should be the body to make a definite move. , x Mr W. B. Trotter said that the Council would give full support to any proposal, and he considered that the wishes of the R.S.A. would have weight when a decision was being made. Messrs K. G. Gray and J. Hansen, representing the Homeservicemen s Association, said that the Association would do all in its power to help any scheme for a memorial. Others present promised support tor any project undertaken. The following motion, proposed by Mr Salt and seconded by Mr Hansen, was carried: “That this meeting recommend the County Council to call a public meeting and invite representatives of every organisation in the area, for the purpose of considering the form a war memorial should take.” An amendment: “That the meeting be called for the purpose of considering a Community Centre as a suitable memorial” was defeated.
