RAMPANT TO-DAY
Criminal Vandalism
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 4. Mr C. M. Bowden (National, Wellington West) moving the withdrawal of the Wellington Anti-vandalism Bill in the House this afternoon, said he did so because of the recommendation of the Local Bills Committee that it should not be allowed to proceed, but that the Government should provide further legislative protection against vandalism and also encourage an educational campaign against vandalism.
Mr Bowden said that since the previous discussion of the measure a further glaring illustration of what was going on had come to his notice. On a hospital construction job in Wellington during a recent week-end certain drains were left exposed, and every drainpipe in them was found smashed. Not only did these pipes have to be replaced, but the concrete in which they were embedded had to be dug up. This caused delay in the completion of urgently needed hospital accommodation.
Mr Bowden said he urgently commended to the Government the recommendations of the Local Bills Committee for dealing with the criminal vandalism which was rampant to-day.
