COMPLIMENTARY BALL

Returned Men Guests Of Mayor

An opportunity of meeting old friends and making new ones was given to returned servicemen at a complimentary ball given at the Caroline Bay Hall last night by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan). More than 200 couples were present and the guests of honour were accorded a welcome by Mr Hanan, who expressed a hope that the dance would be the forerunner of many more similar functions for returned men.

“I want you to hold on to those friendships you formed on the battle-field-friendships which should last you for the rest of your lives,” said Mr Hanan. On behalf of the citizens of Timaru he thanked the returned men again for their cervices overseas. Mr Hanan also thanked Miss M. Brodie (a member of the staff of the Timaru Borough Council) and Mr R. Smith, a returned soldier, for their assistance in decorating the hall. His gratitude wks also extended to the members of the orchestra who gave their services free of charge.

The supper, and all other incidental expenses were paid for by moneys from the accumulated furlough surplus funds, of which, the Mnvor has control.
