RETURNED MEN TO BE EMPLOYED
Bunnerong Power Station (12.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 3. Returned servicemen will be appointed to positions at Bunnerong power station, where 600 men have been on strike for a month. This decision was announced by the general manager of the Sydney County Council (Mr D. J. Nolan), who said that some ex-servicemen had already applied for employment. At a conference with representatives of the Labour Council, Mr Nolan sard the Council had no power to grant a 40-hour five-shift week with 44 hours' pay and an additional 2/- a shift for afternoon and night shifts as suggested by the Labour Council. The only proper course was for the unions to lodge an application for a variation of the award. In reply to a further proposal that the strikers should be permitted to return to work on pre-strike conditions, Mr Nolan said the only conditions for resumption were those set down by the Industrial Commission, namely, a continuous rotating shift roster on a 44hour week basis with an allowance of 2/- a shift for afternoon and night shifts—this to apply to a limited number of employees, who would be transferred from day to shift work.
