NO TRAMS RUN IN MELBOURNE
Dispute Unsettled (11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 3. No trams ran in Melbourne today, all suburban traffic being diverted to the railways which handled it with considerable overcrowding, and many people in purely tramway areas had to walk up to two miles to the nearest station. Most, however, arrived at work on time, many by the aid of hitchhiking methods. Motorists generally were very helpful in this respect. Negotiations were proceeding throughout the day for a settlement. While the dispute was unauthorised by the Tramways Union, the settlement moves are being handled by the union executive, but by an overwhelming majority the 4000 strikers at the meeting to-day decided not to return to work until the suspended members were reinstated and assurances given that a six-day week would be introduced within 14 days. This meeting rejected the executive’s back-to-work recommendation. Another meeting is being held tomorrow afternoon, when the executive will submit the result of further negotiations.
