RAIL AND GAS SERVICES
Threatened By Coal Shortage (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 3. Victoria and South Australia face a serious dislocation of rail and gas services, because of the hold-up of coal ships at Newcastle. In addition, the northern mines are threatened with mass idleness by the stoppage of coal waggons as a result of the same dispute. With eight coal ships held up by the coal trimmers’ strike, whatever coal is available is being diverted by rail to Victoria. There have been no developments in other disputes in New South Wales, where a total of 16,000 workers were idle to-day. Fifteen mines are idle, affecting 5000 miners and resulting in a coal loss of about 17.000 tons, the heaviest for six years. Sydney is so desperately short of timber ' that there is difficulty in supplying coffin boards. The severe rationing- of railway trucks because of the low coal stocks threatens to bankrupt many small sawmillers. The packing of food for the relief of prisoners of war is being seriously delayed because of the chronic dearth of case timber. Thousands of logs are lying on coastal port wharves as a permanent accumulation because the available ships are unable to load sufficient quantities.
