WAIMATE TENNIS
St. Paul’s Club Annual Meeting Because of an increase in membership and a renewal of enthusiasm, members of St. Paul's Tennis Club decided at the annual meeting to enter a B grade team in the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s competitions. There was a good attendance at the meeting. The Rev. H. Benny presided. "The prospects for the coming season are promising,” stated the annual report. Reference was made to an increase of 13 members on the total for the previous year. With the return of men from overseas, a further increase was hoped for in male membership, which had been at a low figure during the last few seasons. The financial statement showed that the club had a credit balance of £2 9 1. Nine new members were elected. The election of officers resulted: Patrons, Messrs G. Dash and J. Bitchener; president, the Rev. H. Benny; vice-presidents, Mesdames J. C. Winning, M. Veitch, M. Preece, and Messrs R. P.'Harris and K. Kippenberger (subject to their consent); club captain, Miss G. Kennard; vicecaptain, Miss W. Bell; secretary and treasurer, Miss D. Giles; committee. Misses G. Kennard. W. Bell, D. Giles, J. Harris, Mrs Richmond, the Rev. H. Benny and Messrs A. F. McLay and C. Middlemass; social committee, the ladies of the committee; delegates to Sub-Association. Miss G. Kennard and Mr D. Nottman. The secretary was instructed to make application to the Borough Council for the lease of one court at Victoria Park on the same terms as previously. Opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 13, and a general invitation to attend the function was issued. Subscriptions remain the same as in previous years—ls. - for men, 10/- for women and 7/6 for juniors. Bowling There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Waimate Ladies' Bowling Club. The report and balance-sheet showed that the club had exoerienced another successful year. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs A. Lyall (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mrs Reeve and Mrs Rathgen; secretary and treasurer, Mrs P. Grant; assistant secretary, Mrs R. Kirk; afternoon tea convener, Mrs Dickson; selection committee, Mesdames Winning and Runciman; committee. Mesdames Lyall, Reeve. Rathgen, Kirk, Gunn, Winning, Runciman and Wilson. Competition games are to be played as usual. Clothing For Europe Five cases of clothing and one case of boots and shoes have been packed in response to the appeal by Unrra, by members of the Waimate branch of the Catholic Women’s League. The cases will be delivered to the Red Cross Society for dispatch.
