GERALDINE GREAT SUCCESS
Rugby Tournament Senior Grade Won By Star Keenly-contested games and Rugby of a high standard were a feature of the .annual seven a-side Rugby tournament which was revived in ideal weather on Saturday. Winning teams in each grade were : Senior, Star; junior. Richmond (Christchurch); third grade, Star; fourth grade, Geraldine A; fifth grade, Celtic A. The organisation of the tournament was in the hands of a committee with the president (Mr A. J. Burmester) as chairman, and Mr L. D. McKenzie as secretary. Messrs Z. O. Sherratt and E. N. J. Hannah acted as controllers at the Domain and secondary school grounds respectively. The refereeing was in the hands of the South Canterbury Referees’ Association. At the conclusion of the tournament, the president thanked everyone for the support they had given in making the tournament a success. He outlined the history of the fixture, which was first organised in 1924 to raise funds for Domain improvements. In congratulating the winners, he expressed a hope that they would be back next year to defend the cups. The Mayor (Mr D. C. McKeclinie), who presented the trophies, congratulated the Sports Association on the successful revival of the tournament. The day had been a good done, the standard of football high, and the officials had kept the programme up to time. Certificates were presented to the following members of the winning teams:— Star seniors—J. Fraser (capt.), W. Tiffen, R. Cooper, R. Clark, L. M. Cameron, S. Jenkins and R. Prattley. Richmond juniors—L. Hibbard (capt.), B. Arps, J. Beattie, V. Brown, J. Plummer; M. Sullivan and J. Downs. Star third grade—J. Phillips (capt.), S. Askey, J. Divan, T. Mclntyre, E. Wallace, I. Johnstone and R. Sapwell. Geraldine fourth grade—M. Carroll (capt.), B. Goodall, R. Henderson, L. Hughan, K. Maister, B. Robertson and C. Foster. Celtic A fifth grade—F. Batchelor (capt.), R. Green, C. Fitzgerald, R. Woodall. A. Skudder, D. Mulcahy and L. Pearce. Results were as follows: Senior Grade First round—Celtic 17. Temuka Second N.Z.E.F. 3; Old Boys A won from Zingari by default; Star 9, Hinds 0; Geraldine won by default from Old Boys B; Temuka 3. Rakaia 0. Second round—Celtic 16, Old Boys A 3; Star 14, Geraldine Second N.Z.E.F. 0. Semi-final—Temuka 3, Geraldine 0; Star 3, Celtic 0. Final—Star 6, Temuka c Junior Grade First round—Pleasant Point 3, Geraldine Young Farmers’ Club 0. Final—Richmond (Christchurch) 5, Pleasant Point 3. Third Grade First round—Hinds 3 won from Old Boys by default; Zingari 17, Hinds B 0; Rakaia 10, Pleasant Point 0; Star 5, Celtic 0; St. Joseph’s Old Boys 14, Rakaia B 0.
