V-J DAY
Victory Programme Timaru Celebrations Complete arrangements have been made for the celebration of V-J Day in Timaru, and the festivities will cater for both young and old. Details are as follows: First day programme: Spontaneous rejoicing after the sounding of the sirens. Business premises will close immediately, and the various bands and the public will parade throughout the main streets. In the evening victory dances will be arranged in various halls throughout the town. Second day programme: At 10 a.m. a Citizens’ Thanksgiving Service will be held at the Caroline Bay Sound Shell. A grand victory procession will assemble under the control of the marshal (Mr C. H. Shackell) at North Street, Woollcombe Street and Stafford Street at 2 p.m. All organisations, business houses, sports bodies, school children and the public are invited to take part. A special invitation is extended to members of the R.S.A. and returned servicemen and servicemen in uniform. The procession will move off promptly at 2.0 p.m. and will proceed along Stafford Street, via Canon Street and Sophia Street, to the Municipal Chambers. The Savage Club will conduct a mock court and there will be community singing, impromptu concerts and open air dancing. After the addresses the children will march down George Street and up Stafford Street north, being split into threes on each side of the route, and those wishing to continue the procession to enable the children to view same are asked to proceed through Latter Street, Woollcombe Street and Stafford Street, dispersing at Church Street, Canon Street and Sefton Street. A torchlight procession headed by the Timaru Municipal Band will leave King Georges Place at 7.0 p.m. tor Caroline Bay, where the Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) will light the bonfire at 8 p.m. The Timaru Highland Pipe Band will play outside the Hydro from 7 p.m. until the procession arrives. The marshal (Mr C. H. Shackell) said last night that to ensure that the victory parade is well supplied with bands, Mr A. G. Tait (rector of the Timaru Boys' High School) had stated that he would be pleased to have both the brass and pine bands amalgamate with the two town bands. With reference to torchlights Mr Shackell explained that thev should be used in the procession with great care. The type as suggested by the Commissioner of Scouts was to use a tin about 21b type (with lid). Cut a long length of material sufficient to fill the tin. Soak with kerosene, soueeze out surplus and then add 6il. Leave standing for a time and then pour off the surplus. Draw wick through a hole in the centre of the lid about 1 inch diameter, with a few smaller holes around it. Lash the tin firmly to a stick with a wire. Draw wick un to increase flame and when carrying keep upright.
