SOUTH ISLAND TEAM
Selectors Censured A motion of strong disapprobation of the South Island selectors in their policy of ignoring the South Canterbury nominees, without seeing the play-' ers in action, was passed at a meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. “As we did not have a representative game this year before the South Island team was announced, we can hardly expect the selectors to come to Timaru to view a club game, in which you do not see the players in the best light,” said Mr D. F. Lindsay. Mr F. V. McAteer said that things would come to a bad state if they had to come down to spoiling club football in favour of representative games. “They are the selectors and should have seen the game,” commented a member. “Here we have a player who was playing good football in club games last year and was not considered. He goes to a main centre and immediately goes into the team,” said Mr A. C. Rippin. All members expressed disappointment that the selectors for the South Island did not come to South Canterbury and view games before selecting the South Island team, and it was unanimously decided to write to the New Zealand Rueby Union on the lines of the above motion.
The Rev. Brother Denis suggested that a cup be secured for competition among the lower grades on the lines of the Griffiths Memorial Trophy in Wellington. Mr Rippin moved that the cup be called "Memorial Cup" in honour of South Canterbury players who lost their lives in this war. It was decided that the Union secure a cup to be known as the South Canterbury Rugby Union Memorial Cup. The Griffiths Memorial Trophy In Wellington is given for the team with the most points in such things as punctuality, behaviour on and off the field, appearance and tilling in of team slips. The fourth, fifth and sixth grade competitions were declared closed and School declared winners in the fourth and fifth and St. Patrick's in the sixth grade. Messrs E. Fairbrother and J. Davev were appointed managers of the South Canterbury team to play Canterbury on Thursday. The referee was left to the referees’ appointment committee. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to P. G. Fitzgerald on his selection for the South Island team. Draw For Saturday Senior—Old Boys v. Geraldine, al. Geraldine, 2.45 p.m. (Mr F.
