Fish Hatchery

There are now 857.000 trout ova and alevins in the hatching boxes at the Temuka hatchery. Of these, 631,000 are from brown trout and 226.000 from rainbow trout. A further 100,000 rainbow ova are expected from Taupo and when these are received, the hatchery will be full. The brown , trout alevins already hatched are looking remarkably well and will be liberated as soon as the river clears. It is possible that a further 50.000 to 60,000 rainbow eggs will be obtained from Scott’s Creek before the season finishes. These will be hatched in the boxes vacated by the liberated browns.
