False Alarm Of Peace
The first thought of many people on the sounding of the firebell yesterday afternoon was that news had been received that the Allies’ peace terms had been accepted by Japan. Disappointment was expressed by many that, so far as peace was concerned, it was a false alarm.
Preparations for peace celebrations are being made by the erection of strings of coloured lights in the main street.
The news of the premature celebrations in Timaru was received in Temuka shortly after 4 p.m., but confirmation of the report was awaited and this was not forthcoming.
