WAIMATE SEASON ENDS
Ladies’ Bowling Club Closing Day Function Women bowlers played a game against members of tne men's cluo on the occasion ol the closing clay funchon of the Waimate Ladies' Bowling V'mb. On behalt of the men, Mr J. McAra expressed thanks for the invitation to be present. ~T be President (Mrs a. Lyall i thanked Mr F. Drayton for help given during the season, and made a small presentation.
Frizes won during the season were presented by the president as follows: Singles Championship (Reeve Cup) Mrs Kirk: runner-up, Mrs Black. Champion Pairs—Mrs Black and Mrs Lewis; runners-up, Mrs Grant and Mrs Palmer.
Club Pairs (Mitchell Cup)—Mrs Kirk and Mrs Woolf; runners-up, Mrs Richards and Mrs Averis. Club Rinks—Mesdames Grant, Gunn Averis and Palmer; runners-up, Mesdames Kirk, Rathgen. Lyall and Stevens.
Navy League Thanks to those who had helped the Navy League's shop day effort and to the committee for their work were expressed by the president (Mr J. M. Wils0?? at a meeting of the committee. Mr Wilson announced that the total realised from the effort, with returns from raffles yet to come, was £2l/10/2. Glenavy Institute
There was a good attendance of members, as well as visitors from Oamaru a hd Wann te, at the monthly meeting 01 the Glenav y Women’s Institute. „y n behalf of members, the president (Mrs W. L. Elliot) made a presentation to Miss Jessie McLean, with all good wishes for her future happiness. Miss McL?an. who is to be married, has been a member since the Institute was formed at Glenavy, and also secretary for some time, a competition conducted bv Mrs Dickson was won by Miss Smart. Humorous readings by Misses N. Duff and M. Cuthbertson were thoroughly enjoyed. Competitions resulted: Prettiest autumn leaf, Mrs Dickson 1, Miss Smart 2; something new' from something old to be given to refugees. Miss N. Duff 1, Mrs Coumbe 2; bloom. Mrs Dickson 1. Mrs Cuthbertson 2; dahlia, Mrs Duff I. Mrs Cuthbertson 2 Waikakahi Red Cross At the annual meeting of the Waikakahi Red .Cross Sub-Centre the followinp- officers were elected: President, Mrs J. c. Coskerie; vice-presidents, Mrs Meredith and Mrs J. C. O’Hara; sec. retary and treasurer, Mrs E. Corbitt; committee. Mesdames c. D. Fleming. L. Cooney, A. Scott, C. Fleming and J. J. O’Hara: auditor. Mr P. McLauchlan. During the year parcels were sent to soldiers from the district and cakes and biscuits were sent , soldiers at Hanmer. At the September meeting members were entertained by the junior members with a programme of songs and a play, a collection- being made for the junior funds. In October a verv successful shop day was held in Waimate. At. Christmas dittv bags were made and filled for Han-mer and the British Sailors’ Society, two being given by junior members. The Sub-Centre had 58 members and a credit balance of £3/6/11.
Chimney Blown Down At least one chimney was blown down in Waimate during a southerly gale which commenced with daylight yesterday. Many branches were stripped from trees, and some fences suffered. Personal Private Patrick Hannifin, who was held as a nrlsoner of war in Germany, has arrived in England, safe and well, according to advice received in Waimate vesterday. The Waimate Federation of Women’s Institutes at the annual meeting decided that a letter should be sent to Mrs Milne, of Tkawai, expressing sympathy in her illness and a hope for her speed'-
