SUDDEN DEATH

Well-known Journalist (N.Z.P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 31. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Mr Walter Joseph Jones, aged 75, editor and governing director of the “Southland Daily News.” A son of the Hon. George Jones, he was bom in Leeston, Canterbury. From 1889 to 1902 he was part-proprietor and editor of the “Hastings Standard.” also editor of the “Oamaru Mail” from 1895 to 1910 and was part-proprietor at the time of his death. A well-known figure in the newspaper world of New Zealand, he was a journalist of the old school. His only son was killed in the Big Bay aeroplane fatality about nine years ago. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs W. W. Butchers.
