HAIL DAMAGE

Relief For Orchardists (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. The Government’s decision regarding assistance for apple and pear growers who suffered from the recent hailstorms was announced by the Hon. B. Roberts, who recalled that the sum of £25,000 had been set aside to assist to raise certain orchards to an economic level. On the recommendation of the Fruit Marketing Council it had been decided that from this amount the Council should distribute £15,000 to those apple and pear growers who had suffered from hail damage in recent months. Assistance would be given on the same general basis as applied to the uneconomic orchard fund and assessments of the losses incurred would be made by the horticultural officers of the Department of Agriculture in association with the local committees.
