YORKSHIRE HERDS

Records In Milk Yields Approximately 10 per cent, of the dairy herds in Yorkshire, Northern England, now yield over 10.0001 b of butterfat and 30 per cent, of the herds over 80001 b, reports the “Yorkshire Post.” These remarkable results achieved in the fifth year of the war are a. striking testimony to the success of the British wartime agricultural policy. Since 1939 imports of animal feed-ing-stuffs have been heavily restricted in order to release maximum shipping space for war material. In 1942-43, for example, 1,300.000 tons only were imported, as against 8,500,000 tons before the war,. a reduction of 85 per cent This planned reduction in imports—which include oil cake, which promotes high milk yields—was skilfully compensated by the planned home production of the Ministry of Agriculture for feeding-stuffs which comes within the framework of the British Government’s highly-eomplex agricultural policy. Any fear that this cut in fodder imports might impair traditionally the high quality of yield of the British milch herds has been effectively answered by the results achieved. It is an astounding fact that the milk consumption in Britain has actually increased by 33 per cent, during the war. This increase has formed the basis of Britain’s amazingly successful food policy which in the war years has maintained national health at such a high level.
