AIRMEN’S FOLLY
Letter-boxes Thrown Into River “I -submit that to record a conviction of theft against these youths, who are hot dishonest, would be a serious handicap to them during the rest of their lives,” said Mr Swarbrick, who appeared for three airmen, Raymond Burgess, Desmond Reginald Sargent and Roderick Gebbie Grant, when they were charged before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in Hamilton with the theft of letterboxes in Hamilton East. A fourth airman, John Simpson Anderson (Mr King) was also charged with the same offence. Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh said that while under the influence of alcohol the airmen pulled four letter-boxes from gates of residences and threw them into the Waikato River. Mr Swarbrick said that the airmen had celebrated on their return from overseas. They regretted their folly. The magistrate said that he would adjourn the hearing for a fortnight and if the youths purchased new letterboxes, replaced them and apologised to the owners nothing more would be heard of the case.
