CZECH MEDAL FOR GALLANTRY
Award To Dominion Airman WELLINGTON. January 7. The Czech Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to the late FlightLieutenant Thomas James Desmond Baber. R.N.Z.A.F., formerly of Wellington. The award was won in January last year. This officer, who was mentioned in dispatches, is officially presumed to have met his death while engaged in air operations on March 12 last year. His mother is Mrs B. E. Baber. Wellington. Flight Lieutenant Baber was prominently associated with sports circles in Wellington. He was early interested in flying, and began training with the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an air gunner in 1939. He received his complete training in New Zealand before going overseas in 1940. In England he won an unusual honour in being one of the first two Zealand air gunners to be commissioned, this taking effect from January, 1940. His name was listed in the 1942 New Year Honours list for being mentioned in dispatches for distinguished service. He was promoted flight-lieutenant last year. He was bom in Napier in 1918, and was educated at Wellington, and before joining the Air Force he was a member of the staff of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd.
