RAIL TRAVEL

Restrictions Removed "(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 8. Tire Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) announces that the War Cabinet has decided that in the meantime it will be possible to lift the restrictions on travel by rail from and including Tuesday, January 12. From that date, persons finding it necessary to travel over 100 miles in the North Island will not require a permit. It is pointed out, however, that the accommodation available for the general public on long-distance trains in the North Island will still be considerably limited and prospective passengers will be well advised to take advantage of the reserved seat system. Otherwise, they are likely to be disappointed. Reservations will not be made more than two weeks ahead and applicants will probably find that it will, at times, not be possible to allocate seats on any particular train or date. In conclusion, the Minister stated that it should be understood that the question of travel restrictions will be reviewed from time to time, with the possibility of permits being again required at some future date. “The necessity for people restricting their travel to essential journeys only, still exists,” added Mr Semple, “so that the Railways Department can give the fullest service in the national interests."
