PRODUCTION COUNCILS

Fears Of Farmers’ Union

It appeared that the Hon. J. G. Barclay, as Minister of Agriculture, might not proceed with the reconstitution of the primary production councils proposed by Mr W. J. Polson, M.P.. when he was in the Ministry, stated the president. Mr H. M. Rushworth, at a meeting of the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. It was evident that the councils merely formed a means for implementing Government policy, and, with the development of bureaucratic control, that policy was likely to become inimical to farmers’ interests and to producer-control. Delegates agreed with the president's views, and one stated that he had already resigned from a council on the grounds of its uselessness.

It was decided that the committee previously set up to deal with primary production council work should take no further action.
