SENTENCE PASSED
OFFENCES BY SOLDIERS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 20. Sentences on three soldiers of the Second N.Z.E.F. and six Territorials, who appeared before courts-martial, have been promulgated. Private John McQueen Smith, of Burnham, who pleaded not guilty, on February 11, to a charge of desertion, was found guilty and sentenced to 60 days’ hard labour. Private Raymond Arthur Lammas, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of desertion, was found not guilty, but foi sentenced to 30 days’ detention. Private Robert James Ayres was also found not guilty of desertiori, but for being absent without leave was sentenced to 30 days’ detention. Gunner Leonard George McGrath, a Territorial, who pleaded guilty on February 12, to a charge of being absent without leave, was sentenced to 30 days’ detention. Henry Hart, and Gunners Alfred Charnley, Franklyn Brydwell Millar, Albert William Henderson, and Maurice Seth Scoles, who also pleaded guilty to charges of being absent without leave, were sentenced to 42 days’ detention.
