LINEN FLAX

Good Yields Obtained Although the weather has caused some delay, half the area of 6000 acres of linen flax sown in South Canterbury has now been pulled and, in the main, yields have proved well up to expectations. In the Geraldine-Washdyke area about 80 per cent of the crop has been pulled and only a few of the later sown crops remain to be dealt with. A feature of the crops this year is that the later sown areas have returned yields better than expected. On the other hand, results have shown that early preparation of the land is more than repaid by the crops obtained. Hasty cultivation has tended to produce a flax short in fibre. Next month the Department of Agriculture will be making a drive to secure areas for next season’s sowings.
