WAIMATE LESS THAN £20

FIRE LOSS IN BOROUGH Loss from fire in Waimate during the last 12 months was less than £2O. That fact was revealed in the report presented to the annual meeting of the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade on Tuesday night. It was stated that the loss was the lowest in the history of the Brigade. The report added that 10 E.P.S. auxiliaries had been enrolled, and as they had become efficient they should be very useful in the event of an emergency. During the year the annual meeting of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades' Association had been held in Waimate. Fireman K. B. Kernick had been appointed junior foreman in the place of Fireman G. Collett. who had resigned through ill health. Practices had been well attended and the plant was in good order. While the Brigade was ready at all times for anything that might come along, the superintendent (Mr H. S. Willets) stated it had, owing to several factors, been unable to do all the work desired. The enthusiasm of members had kept up efficiency in spite of the fact that troublous times had imposed extra work on some of them. Opportunity was taken to present two-year service bars to Firemen F. Horler and H. E. Mewburn. Regret was expressed that one of the oldest members of the Brigade, Fireman H. Thompson, was in hospital as the result of an accident. Mr Willets thanked the honorary members, Messrs S. J. McMaster and T. H. Dunstan, for the interest they had shown in the social life of the Brigade. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Captain, Mr H. S. Willets; lieutenant, Mr C. W. Englefield; senior foreman, Mr L. A. Betten; junior foreman. Mr K. B. Kernick; secretary, Mr F. Nash; senior branchmen, Firemen F. Horler and H. E. Mewburn; junior branchmen, Firemen S. Jones and L. Hunt; hydrant men, Firemen E. Dash and J. Moncrieff.
