FAIRLIE SCOUT WEEK

LOCAL OBSERVANCE Fairlie, in common with other parts of New Zealand, is this week to observe “Scout Week.” Arrangements have been made for all members of the Boy Scout Troop and the Girl Guide Company to attend their various schools to-morrow wearing uniform —Scouts and Guides are to be granted a halfholiday at both the District High School and St. Joseph’s Convent. These arrangements have been made as part of Fairlie’s observance of “ Scout Week.” To-morrow afternoon Scouts and Guides will combine in a collection of books and magazines to be forwarded to Territorial and National Reserve camps. Citizens of Fairlie are. asked to co-operate by having their parcels ready for the collectors who will be commencing at 1.30 p.m. In the evening a demonstration of scout and guide activities win be given, and an invitation is extended to all children, parents and others Interested. At 7 o’clock a parade will take place through the main street to the school grounds. During the evening Mrs G. Berney will present a Group Scoutmaster’s warrant to the Scouter (the Rev. D. M. Taylor). Mr F. J. C. Turner will also give a talk on scouting. On Saturday local scouts will travel to Timaru to attend the function to be held on Caroline Bay. On the same day the Girl Guide Company will go for a “hike.” The observance will be completed on Sunday when an openair service will be held at) the Memorial at 2.30 p.m. This service will be conducted by the Rev. D. M. Taylor. BOWLING Recently the local bowling clubs held a special afternoon in aid of patriotic purposes. The weather was fine and there was a large attendance of players and spectators. During the afternoon mixed progressive doubles were played. Other competitions played were won by G. Leslie and J. Forrester. The net proceeds amounted to £7/3/-. The president (Mr J. Macdonald) thanked all for their support. He also thanked the donors of the prizes, Messrs T. McKenzie and C. Knight, and the women who had supplied and served the afternoon tea. PERSONAL Advice has been received that Corporal A. H. Carlton, who was reported missing, is a prisoner of war in Italy.
