WASHDYKE BRIDGE

OBSTACLES TO BUILDING Pleas for a new bridge at Washdyke have been prepared, but factors governing when building would be commence were supply of material and finance, advised Mr T. G. Beck, representative of the Highways Board on the District Highways Council in a letter read at a meeting of the Automobile Association 1 st evening. The letter was in reply to representations from the Association urging the early erection of a new bridge. Under present conditions it was impossible to secure sufficient steel to do all the work the Board desired to do in the way of bridge renewal, Mr Beck stated, so tbit the onl" bridges that could be built were those that replaced structures in a bad state of repair. That could not be said for the existing bridge at Washdyke. It was anticipated. Mr Beck continued. that the Highways Board allocation would permit provision of sufficient funds for a new bridge at Washdyke, particularly as funds were required for a second coat sealing on the Rangitata deviation and the sealing of the section between Pareora and Deep Creek. The chairman (Mr R. Wilson) said that since the letter was written the Board’s allocation had been made and no provision was made for the bridge. The Association could do no more.
