GERALDINE SIGNS TO DRAW TRAFFIC
Businessmen Discuss Erection Detour From Winchester And Rangitata The erection of sign posts at Winchester and Rangitata to draw the attention of motorists to the sealed detour road through Geraldine, was discussed by businessmen, and others interested, at a meeting in the Geraldine Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday night. The Mayor (Mr D. C. McKechnie) presided. The meeting approved the action of the Mayor and Mr H. Morrison in approaching the South Canterbury Automobile Association for their assistance and advice, and Mr McKechnie reported that the Automobile Association would assist, ‘‘to the extent of making the people of Geraldine happy about the position.” It was recommended that large arrow signs worded “South via Geraldine” and "North via Geraldine” be erected at Rangitata and Winchester, both with the words “sealed detour road,” added. It was agreed to approach the Railways Department and the South Canterbury Electric Power Board about erecting the signs on their property. It was further agreed to make inquiries to ascertain if reflectors were procurable for signs to make them more effective at night and to write to the Public Works Department urging for the painting of signs on the road at Rangitata, Orari and Winchester. The need for two symbolic signs at the Orari highway junction to Geraldine was mentioned and it was agreed to ask the Automobile Association if they would carry out this work. Messrs E. B. D. Logan. H. Morrison, E. Undrill and the Mayor were appointed a sub-committee to take the matter further and to meet Messrs R. Wilson and E. Scott of the South Canterbury Automobile Association when they visit Geraldine. The advisability of obtaining festive street lighting for the Christmas period was mentioned by the Mayor who said that last year he had undertaken a canvass of the town for money for lights. The meeting thought that it was desirable that festive lighting should be obtained again this year and suggested that the South Canterbury Power Board might be approached to canvass the business area for the money for strings of street lights.

Knight was appointed in charge of a works committee and the supper arrangements were left to a committee in charge of Miss M. Gresham. It was agreed that invitations be forwarded to the soldiers, and their wives and parents to attend the function.
