TEMUKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

“False Alarms” For Firemen [ Inconvenience Caused By Siren Because a Temuka industry was employing a siren as a means of a time signal to its employees, members of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade had become confused because of the similarity to the siren on the brigade’s engine. A letter from the brigade was read at a meeting of the Temuka Borough Council last evening. It was stated that men of the brigade had left their work on occasions upon hearing the siren. The town clerk was asked to ascertain the legal position. Those present at the meeting were: The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), Crs W. McMillan. L. Whitehead, J. M. A. Ritchie, T. N. Scott, D. C. Clark, P. H. Lynch and J. Burns. That the Public Works Department was carrying heavy loads on the main street was mentioned by Cr Lynch. He did not consider the matter fair and suggested that a deviation should be made. The Mayor, explained that the holders of heavy traffic licences were permitted to use the main highway. A request that local bodies should assist farmers 'by making available men from Scheme 13 to those farmers in districts distant from a placement office and urgently requiring casual labour for work dictated by the weather, was conveyed in a letter from the Department of Labour. The Council decided to accede to the request. Acknowledgement of the receipt of £lOB/16/3, the Temuka and district contribution to the Aeroplane Fund, was received from the Hon. W. Nash. Rates collected during the month amounted to £l6O/1/9, stated the report of the finance committee and receipts totalled £1772/8/5. It was decided to make a grant of £lOO to the Domain Board. On the suggestion of Cr. McMillan it was decided to send no representatives to the Municipal conference, or the conference of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks which are proposed to be held in Auckland next March. Christmas greetings to the Mayor and Councillors were received from Cr. W. G. Rowlands, who is on active service in the Middle East. It was decided to send to Cr. Rowlands a Christmas gift and greetings from the Mayor and Councillors. Sympathy with the relatives of the late J. W. Campbell and S. Cebalo was expressed by the council. Sympathy was also expressed with the relatives of the late J. Buckley and the relatives of the late Mayor of Ashburton (Dr. G. I- Millar). Foreman’s Report Work in progress during the month . included the formation of John street between the North Belt and Alexandra street, stated the report by the borough foreman, Mr T. Devine. Surplus spoil was being used to complete the formation of new roads adjoining the Shaw street bridge and the approach at the north end of the Guise street footbridge, where surfacing was in progress. It was proposed to form the grass road from Alexandra street to Fox street and an approach at the south end of the footbridge to conform with new work undertaken on the north side of the reserve Clay binding has been spread and watered on Cass Street from King Street to Railway Terrace and also at intersections on Allnutt, Godley, Davie streets and Wilmhurst road.” continued the report. “This work is at present in progress on Alexandra, Hamilton and Studholme streets and will be continued where most urgently required as materials become available. Continued dry weather has been the main cause of slow consolidation of streets where surface shingling has recently been undertaken. It is proposed to concentrate as far, as possible on binding work where road surfaces are unsettled. “Reconstructed footpaths on Cass street, Railway Terrace and Ewen road have been surfaced, in readiness for sealing which will be started at once, with materials on hand, in conjunction with patching on sealed roads, and existing footpaths and top-dressing of sections of Railway Terrace.” One leak in the Orari pipeline was mended and a fault in the town main had been repaired. The level at the Orari intake remained satisfactory and a new plug had been prepared for the Waihi line and would be fitted next week. In Shaw street 30 feet of seven-inch concrete storm-water pipes had been laid. Grass mowing had been continued on streets and playgrounds.
