GUARD FOR JUDGES

I.R.A. Appeal Against Death Sentences United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 22. Following Scotland Yard’s receipt of information about possible I.R.A. action, extraordinary precautions were taken in the Law Courts when the Chief Justice (Lord Hewart) and Justices Hilberry and Hallett began the hearing of the appeal of two Irish terrorists, Barnes and Richards, against the death sentences imposed on them for murder as the result of the Coventry bomb outrage in November. Special detectives guarded the judges and 75 detectives patrolled the approaches and guarded the doorways. Police motor-cycles and cars escorted the two Black Marias conveying the appellants separately from Pentonville prison. The hearing was adjourned.
