COMMISSION IN NAVY By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, January 23. A Rhodes Scholar, Mr George Laurence Hogben, M.A., son of Mr Julius Hogben, Auckland, who has received a commission in the Royal Navy, was in Russia when war was declared as a member of a group of educationists on a conducted tour. To raise money for his return to England he and an American Rhodes Scholar pawned their belongings at great loss and flew from Moscow to Stockholm via Riga. In Stockholm the British Consul gave him sufficient money to reach Newcastle with nothing for meals on the way. He was one of thousands of students who applied for a commission in the Navy as a lieutenant-instructor. He was one of nine successful applicants, and was sent to the Royal Naval College, Green wicl> He is a brilliant mathematician.
