SWEPT BY HEAVY RAIN

ORCHARDS AND GARDENS DAMAGED

By Telegraph—Press Association

HASTINGS, January 15.

Hawke’s Bay was swept by heavy rain and a strong north-easterly gale on Saturday night and early yesterday morning, causing damage to orchards and commercial and residential gardens. What relief the muchneeded rain brought to pastures and farm and garden crops was largely offset by the high wind, which continued throughout the greater part of yesterday.

Orchardists, especially those whose plantations are in exposed areas, report a good deal of damage through the fruit being knocked off trees and from rubbing and bruising.

Gravenstein apples, Winter Nelis pears, and plums appear to have suffered most. Ryegrass crops were not seriously affected.
