MANY OUT OF WORK
RESULT OF FIRE By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, January 15. Approximately 120 employees of three business firms affected by the fire in the building of Hope, Gibbons, Ltd., will be out of work temporarily until the employers can make arrangements to carry on in other premises. Mr Lees, of Lees and Co., manufacturing tailors, said he would have 65 to 70 out of work this week. New premises would have to be found and the whole plant would have to be completely overhauled before production could commence again, which would not be for another month. The fire had come at a bad time as a start was about to be made on the new season’s trade, and water damaged large quantities of imported materials and trimmings that could not be replaced because of import restrictions. Blake and Co. have about 40 out of work. They hope to be in operation in other premises within a week. Welsbach Light Co. have about 10 temporarily out of work. Hope, Gibbons, Ltd., state that the building and the stock held by them were fully covered by insurance, but particulars were not available as they held a floating policy which fluctuates with the value of the stock held. Welsbach Light Company’s stock was insured for £14,000. Leo Blake and Co. have their stock, machinery and plant covered to the extent of £2595. F. Lees and Co.’s policies are £2050 covering stock and plant, and £750 for stock only.
