WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
ASH WICK FLAT Mrs Carter presided over a small attendance at the last meeting of the Ashwick Flat Women’s Institute. Members stood in silence in respect to the late Mrs H. Allan, a foundation member of the Institute and also a pioneer of the district. Mrs Allan's cheery disposition and her hospitality will long be remembered by those who were fortunate to know her. Mention was also made of the passing of Miss Jessie Mackay, the first school teacher at Ashwick Flat and later a gifted poetess. It was unanimously decided to send a parcel of goods to Makogai. Mrs Arthur Bray then read a comprehensive report of the conference and a vote of thanks was passed to her by Mrs T. P. Berry. A competition arranged by Mrs Berry was won by Mrs Black and Mrs Williams. The golden thread was taken by Mrs W. M. Black who played two selections on the mandolin. Miss Aileen Gallagher was hostess for the afternoon. The arrangements for the birthday party and annual dance were discussed. The competitions resulted as follows: Article from one yard of summer breeze: Mrs Arthur Bray 1 (child’s frock), Mrs W. M. Black 2 (child’s frock). Bloom: Miss Aileen Gallagher 1 (snowdrops), Mrs G. E. Jones 2 (primrose).
