ODDS AND ENDS
Grease the lid of the saucepan around the rim, and the liquid which is cooking in it will not boil over. When a pattern is being cut out of soft, thin material it is worth while to try the following method. First lay a large sheet of clean newspaper on the table, then lay the material on this paper, and the pattern on the material. Pin all three carefully together and cut out in the usual way. The extra layer of paper underneath the material keeps it from slipping and gives it firmness, so that the cutting out may be done easily and accurately. Always keep a pair of scissors handy in your kitchen. They are clean, quick and useful for cutting fins and tail off fish, and the rind off your bacon. You can snap up the mint for mint sauce. A novel way to mend small tears in your clothes is to buy a twopenny packet of skin plaster and cut off a piece the size required. Then moisten the plaster and also your material, and press the plaster over the back of the tear. Be sure to press hard with a cold iron until stuck. There is no need to relay a fire when it has gone out. Instead, light a wax taper and hold it until it burns down for about one inch, then push it into the centre of the wood and coals until the taper is pushed completely in without putting the lighted end out. To make corks airtight, submerge them for five minutes in melted paraffin wax. They can then be easily cut or bored and introduced to or removed from a bottle with ease. A scorch mark can be removed from a woollen jumper by soaking the marked portion in glycerine. Leave to dry and then wash in a lather of warm water and soap. Rinse in warm water.
