FAT LAMBS
COMPETITION TO BE HELD Preliminary arrangements for the annual South Canterbury fat lamb competition were made at a meeting of those interested in the industry yesterday. Mr A. S. Elworthy presided. The competition is held under the auspices of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, fifteen pens of three lambs being selected to form the district’s entry in a competition among the provinces which is judged at Smithfield (London). It was decided to hold this year’s competition at Smithfield on the Friday following the opening of the works, entries to close the preceding night. A proposal that the live weight of lambs be limited to 621 b as was the case last year was defeated, and it was agreed to place no restriction on the weight. Two competitions, on the hoof and on the hooks, were decided on. the judge of the former to be arranged for by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Co. and Messrs M. Hanna (Government inspector) and D. Irving (grader) to judge the latter. Nine o'clock was fixed as the time for the assembly of lambs at the works. It was decided to invite representatives of the Meat Board and freezing company to address the gathering.
