APPEAL DISMISSED

By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. Three Racing Conference judges, Messrs T. H. Lowry, T. E. Coates and H. L. Nathan, heard P. T. Hogan’s appeal against the Canterbury District Committee upholding the decision of the Ashburton County Racing Club ordering him to pay the losing fee for breaking an engagement with R. J. Mackie, to ride Dunstan. The judges are of the opinion that when a trainer engaged a jockey to ride subject to the owner's approval, the duty of the trainer is to ascertain at the earliest possible moment whether the owner approves, and immediately advise the jockey concerned, instead of waiting till the day of the race before acquainting the jockey of the owner’s decision. Later, in a supplementary announcement, the judges announced that they had disallowed the appeal.

V.R.C. STAKES ECCLES HEADS LIST OF WINNERS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, November 8. E. Eccles heads the list of winning owners at the V.R.C. meeting. His cheque amounted to £7760. All with the exception of £6O was won by The Trump. E. Clarke is second with "3250, won by Hua in the Derby. C. Hambley is third with £2250, netted by Mohican’s two wins. I. L. Coop, fourth, received £2177 for three minor placings by WiUie Win.

Pelmet sprang a surprise yesterday by running out the seven furlongs in the Criterion Handicap, and paying a big win dividend. As an early two-year-old the Limond mare was a brilliant little galloper, winning the McLean and Wellesley Stakes, but she did not train on, and her Criterion win was her first for more than two years. Just how “fast” conditions were early in the day at Riccarton was shown when Defaulter’s 47sec was posted in the Irwell Handicap. When the Welcome Stakes was run over five furlongs the record for the course (and for New Zealand) was 46 l-ssec, made by the flying Conqueror. The nearest approach to this in the race was Epitaph’s 47 l-ssec.
