Derby Day at Riccarton

Royal Chief Outclasses Field

Friesland Wins Handicap Special to “ The Herald * CHRISTCHURCH, November 8. The weather was muggy and nor’-westry for the opening of the Derby Day programme at Riccarton, and the attendance was good. The track was even faster than on Saturday, and atmospheric conditions were conducive to fast times.

The Derby produced an interesting race with little more than a length covering the first three at the finish, but there was no question concerning the superiority of Royal Chief, who appears to be well up to classic standard.

Pelmet returned to winning form after two years by going to the front early and leading for the rest of the trip in the Criterion Handicap, and Friesland justified the confidence of northerners by running from last to first to beat Davolo in the Fendalton Handicap. Trench Fight effected a change in the Clifford fortunes by outstaying The Bigot in the Epsom Handicap, with Milford also in the picture. The totalisator investments were £37,410, compared with £30,548/10/last year. Results:—

NOTES ON THE RACING Sunny Blonde Easily For the opening event, the Middleton Highweight, the Trentham mare Sunny Blonde 613-616 was preferred to Lustral 513-587, Last Link 434-598 ,and The Surgeon 348-451. All began well except The Surgeon, but at the end of a furlong Sunny Blonde was showing out from Lustral, Heloise and Last Link. Across the top Sunny Blonde was followed by Private Bunsby. Last Link, Lustral, Superex and Lady Siegfried. The favourite led into the straight from Last Link, The Surgeon and Superex, and she held on to win by nearly two lengths from The Surgeon, who beat Superex by half a length. Lady Siegfried was about a length and a half away, just heading Convivial. Last Link was travelling like a placegetter two furlongs from home, but did not run on. Promising Juvenile Surmount, making his first appearance at the meeting, was made a pronounced favourite for the Irwell Handicap, with Ortyx, Pink Bond, Defaulter and Eastern Heir carrying most of the remaining money. There was some crowding at the start, Surmount being one of those Involved, but the favourite soon joined Great Baby and Ortyx in the lead, and this trio ran on to the main course in line, clear of Defaulter. In the last furlong Defaulter outstayed Surmount and beat him home by a length. Ortyx was a length and a half away, just stalling off On Call, who finished fast after getting into trouble at the start.

Won Going Away Thirteen of the fifteen starters in the maiden race, the Strowan Plate, were Rlccarton-tralned. Backers selected Kindly 545-689, Sunbeam 482-592, Rabble 373-595, and Screamer 324-503. Haerepo was badly left and Ardmayle lost a good deal of ground. Mulatto and Screamer were soon prominent from Sunbeam, Kindly, Love Affair and Pol Roger. At the junction with the main course Mulatto, Screamer and Pol Roger appeared to be just shading Kindly, Pol Roger and Sunbeam, with Glenogll handy. In the run to the judge Glenogll headed Mulatto and Screamer, but Rabble came fast on the outside and won going away by a neck. Screamer was about two lengths away, a length' ahead of Mulatto, with Pol Roger, Love Affair and Mob Rule close up. The Derby There were only four runners for the Derby, but they were a fine-looking quartette. Royal Chief was sent out a hot favourite, being entrusted with nearly three times as much money as Smoke Screen, who was second choice. Smoke Screen was rather on his toes at the barrier, but there was no great delay. The Crooner went out to force the pace, and turned out of the straight three lengths ahead of Royal Chief, who was two lengths ahead of the other pair. Racing up the back The Crooner had Increased his advantage to five lengths, the other positions being unchanged. At the five furlongs he had dropped back to three lengths, but at the four he had again widened the gap, and turning for home he was still nearly three lengths ahead of Royal Chief, who was clear of Smoke Screen. In the run up the straight Royal Chief gradually made up ground, and a furlong from the post he had the race in hand. Smoke Screen finished well and got within half a length of Royal Chief, but the winner had something in reserve. The Crooner hung on well and was only half a length behind Smoke Screen, but Lazybones was beaten off.

Pelmet From End to End Dictate was struck out of the Criterion Handicap, and backers, apparently believing that the handicapper had not yet got Alma’s measure, sent the Stewards’ winner out a decided favourite from Rebel Chief, Black Thread and Triune. There was a holdup at the barrier, caused mainly by Triune and Wino (who were sent to the outside), Wild Career and Grey Honour. Gaysome and Triune both lost ground when the barrier rose. Paper Slipper and Black Thread were first to show, but Pelmet soon took charge and led to the six furlongs from Paper Slipper, Alma, Wino, Grey Honour and Black Thread. There was little change across the top, and at the home turn the call was Pelmet, Alma, Paper Slipper, Wino. Pelmet was never caught, and won by nearly two lengths from Wild Career, who finished fast in the middle and beat another late-comer. Triune, by a neck. Paper Slipper was a length away, with another length to Wino and Alma. Friesland Wins Well The withdrawal of Sunee left 10 runners in the Fendalton Handicap. Those with most admirers were Friesland 1335-1065, Davolo 644-777 and

Boomerang 639-688. Linguist, Davolo and Enge were first away, and at the end of a furlong Enge dashed into a two lengths’ lead from Linguist, Davolo, Rebel Lad, Queen Dorothy and Boomerang. They raced in that way to the far turn where Last Refrain (who struck trouble) and Friesland were last. Enge led Linguist, Davolo, Queen Dorothy, Boomerang and Rebel Lad across the top, and into the straight the order was Enge, Davolo, Queen Dorothy. Enge was beaten two furlongs from home, leaving Davolo with the race apparently won, but Friesland came with a fast run and secured the verdict by over a length. Last Refrain was half a length away, a length in front of Lady Graceful and Pukeko, with Boomerang and Rebel Lad close up. Janet Gaynor Again Alunga 1177-924, Lickem 648-725 and Sir Hugh 566-703 were the popular selections for the Randolph Handicap, but none of them caught the eye of the judge. Studley Royal whipped round at the barrier and wrecked his chance. Janet Gaynor soon ran to the front from Paper Note, Sigurd, Alunga, Lady Montana and Llckem. Racing round the top Janet Gaynor was out clear followed by Sigurd, Alunga, Paper Note and Lady Montana. Janet Gaynor appeared to be in danger two furlongs from home, but she came away again and won decisively from Lady Montana, who had been runner-up to her on the first day. Thermidor came with a late run to collect third money, and Norseman was running on in fourth place. Lickem, fifth, did best of the fancied candidates. A Chokebore Success The Bigot, making his first appearance in open company, carried almost twice as much money as the second selection, Trench Fight, in the Epsom Handicap. Milford delayed the start, but a good despatch was secured although (Big Dook and Waitaka soon dropped back. Daring Deed took up the role of pacemaker and led. to the far turn from Roaming, Trench Fight, Big Dook and Milford. Round the top the leaders held their positions, and turning for home Daring Deed and Roaming were just clear of Trench Fight and The Bigot, with Milford next. Trench Fight and The Bigot forged ahead in the final furlong and Trench Fight, finishing the straighter of the two, won by a good head. Milford was about two lengths away, a length ahead l! Roaming, Big Dook and Fiord, who could hardly be separated. HANDICAPS FOR THIRD DAY
