INDIANAPOLIS

CAN HE WIN A FOURTH TIME? TROTTING CUP Dating back no further than 1904, the New Zealand Trotting Cup is comparatively an infant compared with the big event of Carnival Week at Riecarton, but the stake is the biggest offered for any race in the Dominion, and in Christchurch at least it ranks on an equality in public interest with the other Cup. The first Cup winner was Mr T. Yarr’s Monte Carlo, driven by B. Edwards, in 4.44 2-5. Birchmark, the second winner, took 5.17 3-5, but in 1908 Durbar established a record of"Tj6, which Wildwood Junior reduced to 4.33 on his second success in 1910, and four years later the Gore mare Win Soon stepped 4.31. A new mark was set at 4.27 4-5 by Adelaide Direct in 1917, and reduced to 4.26 2-5 by Author Dillon a year later. The first winner to break 4.20 was Peter Bingen 4.18 4-5, but Harold Logan quickly reduced the mark to 4.18 2-5 and next to 4.16 2-5, and three years ago Indianapolis won in 4.15 2-5, This is the present winning record, though nqt the track record, as Harold} Logan 4.12 2-5 and Rol I'Or 4.14 1-5 have several times gone faster in minor places. The history of the Trotting Cup is bound up with the progressive development of stamina in our pacers. Thirteen years ago, Acron (from a moving but not racing start) covered a mile in an actual race in 2.3 3-5, making his own pace all the way. That is not so much inferior to Indianapolis’s 2.0 2-5 with pacemakers from a racing start. At the time Acron’s figures were recorded only five pacers had bettered 4:25 for two miles, the best being 4.21 V 5 by Author Dillon. The development in this direction has been so rapid that to-day a horse has to be capable of breaking Author Dillon's time to be sure of success in a 4.35 class.

Several horses have won the Trotting Cup twice, and always twice in succession. The first double winner was Wildwood Junior, then followed at intervals Reta Peter, Ahuriri, Peter Bingen and Harold Logan. Reta Peter on the second occasion was beaten by Sherwood, but the placings were reversed on an allegation that she had been crossed in the straight by the winner. Indianapolis has gone one better by winning the last three Cups, and today will attempt to make his score four not out.

J. Bryce, senr., has trained six Cup winners—Cathedral Chimes, Great Hope, Ahuriri (twice), Kohara and Red Shadow—and driven four of them, the other two being piloted by his sons. The biggest prize given for a Trotting Cup was £4OOO, but that was in one of the two seasons in which the race was run in divisions and a final, so that this amount was spread over three races. The highest figure for a straight-out race is £3500.

An innovation has been made this year with the object of ensuring a sound pace throughout the race. Substantial amounts will be paid c..i of the stake to the horse leading past the judge’s box at four furlongs and It miles, and if the track is in good order it is reasonable to expect fast time to be registered, particularly as the course seems to be Improved since the renovation was completed. If Indianapolis is to succeed for the fourth year in succession he will probably have to improve on his previous best time.
