PLANS OF DUKE OF WINDSOR
AMERICAN CIRCLES RETICENT United Press Association Bv Electric Telpernph Copvrieht (Received October 5, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 4. A short statement from Miss Frances Perkins (Secretary for Labour) is the first indication of the official reaction to the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor by Miss Perkins promising to co-operate in assisting in the study of working conditions. Miss Perkins said: “The facilities of the Department of Labour are always available to visitors interested.” Mr Cordell Hull (Secretary of State), at a Press Conference evaded questions relating to the visit.
It is understood that the Duke and Duchess of Windsor will be invited to a formal dinner at White House. Any private audience with President Roosevelt is likely to be governed by political considerations.
Some quarters fear that an audience might be regarded as a hint that the Administration sympathises with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor against the British Government.
PLANNING RECEPTION UNEASINESS IN OFFICIAL CIRCLES Onlted Press Association—By Electric Tplpernnh rnrvricht (Received October 6, 0.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, October 5 The Washington correspondent of “The New York-Herald-Tribune” says: “What is necessary for politeness and no more will apparently rule in governing the reception of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor by the State Department and the British Embassy. The newspaper says that political and diplomatic complications are feared from the alleged pro-Nazi sympathies of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, particularly if the Duke makes any pronouncements comparing German and American public housing, which is likely to result in controversy.
