The death has occurred of Major Baden Fletcher Baden-Powell, who invented a man-lifting kite years before the first aeroplane was flown. He was ope of the last to practise ballooning as a sport in Britain. Shortly before the Great War, with the consent of the War Office, he supplied the German Government with set kites. During the Boer War Lord Methuen asked Major Baden-Powell to send up kites to take photographs above Magersfontein. Major Baden-Powell explained that the War Office did not allow him to take the kites to South Africa. He immediately began to construct one, but the Boers evacuated the town before its completion. As Intelligence Officer he preceded the relief column to Mafeking by picking his way at night through Boer ranks. Traversing a deserted street he saw a man thrust his head from a window. “Where’s Colonel Baden-Powell’s house?" asked the major. “This Is It, come in.” replied his brother whom he thus strangely met just before the end of the great siege.
