WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION The executive of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes met in St. Mary’s Guild room, Geraldine, on Monday. The president (Mrs L. E. Williams), presided over the following members. —Mesdames G. A. M. Macdonald, S. C. Chisnall, S. Unwin, A. Guild, J. McLeod, P. Grant and A. G. Brown.

Vice-presidents for the ensuing year were elected as follow; Mesdames P. W. Hislop, G. A. M. Macdonald and W. E. Mills.

The following were elected voluntary organisers, Mrs J. McLeod, Tycho, Mrs L. E. Williams, Woodbury, Mrs A. Mackenzie, Fairlie; Mrs W. E. Mills, St. Andrews, Mrs J. C. Hurst, Waimate; and Mrs A. G. Brown, Geraldine; and group conveners were elected as follow: Mr.- A. Mackenzie, Fairlie, Mrs J. McLeod, Pleasant Point; Mrs Duncan Taylor, Temuka; Mrs P. Grant, Waimate; Miss Russell, St. Andrews; and Mrs A. G. Brown, Geraldine.

A letter was received from Mrs Alfred Watt, president of the Associated Country Women of the World, thanking them for kindness shown to her during her recent tour, and asking that any items or articles, of interest to country women in other parts of the world, be sent to her for publication in “The Country Woman," the official organ of the association. It was arranged that the Federation stage a period dress parade at the winter show and Mrs A. G. Brown was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. Mrs S. Unwin was elected choir secretary, and it was reported that the choirs competition would also take place on June 25, in St. Patrick's Hall, Browne Street. Timaru. Mrs P. W. Hislop, who reported on behalf of the tree-planting committee, said that 24 trees were required to complete that portion of the main highway near Timaru, which had been commenced two years ago. It was suggested that as a special coronation effort, trees representing England, Scotland, Ireland and the Dominions of the British Empire be planted, and the offer of four trees from the Federation and five from members of the committee was received. Communication was received from the Hon. F. Jones in connection with the mutilation of trees by Power Boards and Post and Telegraph Departments. At a recent conference in Wellington in regard to Bush Conservation and amenity planting, the matter had been referred to the Hon. R. Semple for consideration. A motion that the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes join the National Council for Conservation and Amenity Planting was carried. It was reported that the Institute Depot in Timaru would be transferred to new premises shortly, and it was suggested that each Institute in the Federation could help by being responsible for supplies for the depot for one week in the year. It was mentioned that the hospitality scheme had progressed a further step by procuring a home in Timaru. where mothers from the country might stay prior to going into hospital. BURKE’S PASS There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Burke’s Pass Women’s Institute, held in the school room. Mrs W| Scott presided. New members were welcomed, also visitors from Fairlie and Sherwood Downs. The competition resulted as folllows: Best bloom (judged by Mrs C. Searle) Miss G. Macintosh 1, Miss N. Mackintosh 2, Mrs Willetts 3. Mrs M. L. West was thanked for a very interesting demonstration of wool rug and tapestry work. Mrs E. Clarke delegate to the Geraldine conference gave an interesting report and was accorded a vote of thanks. Generous support was forthcoming at the bring and buy table. Invitations were received to the Sherwood Downs Women’s Institute dance, and Fairlie Women’s Institute birthday party. Afternoon tea was dispensed, the hostesses being Mrs and Miss Anderson. EALING There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ealing Women’s Institute. Mrs Giddings (vice-president) was in the chair and reported on the recen. Mid-Canterbury Federation meeting, also explaining the proposed Produce School. Members for the drama circle were enrolled, and it was decided to plant a row of rowan trees near the hall. The c—onation memorial tree also a rowan, was planted by Mrs Giddings and Miss P. Withell, each member afterwards putting a spadeful of earth round the tree. Votes of thanks were passed to the County Council for their gift of posts and netting and also to the men folk of the district for their help in digging the holes for all the trees. An interesting demonstration of an electric ironing machine was given. The hostesses were Mesdames Simpson, Ke' n and Gibb.

The delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting held at Geraldine gave a report on th: meeting. Mrs W. Kellahan gave the golden thread talk which was most interesting. Miss Pearce gave an interesting demonstration of smocking and was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows.—Article from flour bag. senior: Mrs J. Jng 1, Mrs Blay 2. Juniors. AROWHENL'A At the monthly meeting of the . lowhenua Women's Institute held on Monday, Mrs K. Rehu presided. Visitors from the Temuka and Hilton Women’s Ins'iute were welcomed. Mrs Taylor continued "the golden thread.” Mrs H. S. Hansen demonstrated the building and use of a tireless cooker. The monthly competitions resulted as follows. —Specimen bloom: Mrs Larson and Miss E. Greaves equal 1, Mrs K. Rehu 2, Mrs Paynter 3. Hot water bag cover: Mrs Paynter 1, Miss Betty Hopkinson 2. Miss Joan Hopkinson 3. Dish of jam: Mrs Paynter 1, Mrs G. Rang! 2, Mrs L. Hopkinson 3. The judges were Misses Omelvena 'and M. Wilks, Hilton Women’s Institute. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mrs W. MLxaka. Mrs E. Gillum, Mrs J. Leonard and Mrs L. Hopkinson.
