HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING ROUTINE BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board was held yesterday. Present —Mr E. Macdonald (chairman), Mrs B. Hewson, Messis J. C. Hay, J. Dempsey, B. R. Macdc iald, C. E. Kerr, R. W. Simpson, H. J. Clark, C. Ley, G. Saunders and Dr. C. A. Paterson. The secretary of the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee wrote appealing for reading matter for patients in the institution. The Board agreed to accept suitable reading material for forwarding on to Waipiata. House Committee The House Committee reported as follows: New Surgical Block.—The architects advised that decisions were necessary regarding the system of telephones to be installed and whether provision is to be made for electric clocks. Recommendations: —(1) That the telephone service as supplied by the Post and Telegraph Department be installed. (2) That provision be made for five electric clocks. The architects also advised that they were calling tenders for the heating and hot water systems and submitted a report by the clerk of works that the work on the new block is progressing satisfactorily. Accommodating Children. —Arising out of the Medical Superintendent's report a committee consisting of Messrs Simpson and Saunders and Dr. McKenzie, were appointed to inspect a property in College Road regarding its suitability for accommodating children at present in Ward 6.

Wireless Installation, Talbot Hospital. —Mr Simpson reported that a suggestions had been made that the Crippled Children's Fund purchase and instal a wireless set at Talbot Hospital. Recommendation:— That permission be granted for same. The report was adopted. Social Service The Social Service Committee reported as follows: The following cases were dealt with by the committee at its last meeting, the figures in brackets being for the corresponding period last year:—New cases: Eight (6) new application for assistance were dealt with by the committee, seven were granted and one was held over for further inquiry. Temporary cases: Fourteen (15) applications for further assistance were granted. Statistics for the month of April, 1937. The total value of orders to 60 cases for the whole district is as follows:—Rations, £l2l/4/5; clothing, £B/7/6; fuel, £l7/8/5; Rent, £5O/6/1; board, 7/6; cash grants, £l/4/0; total, £l9B/17/11, as compared with £329/8/for the corresponding month last year. The report was adopted. Finance Committee The Finance Committee reported as follows: Industrial and Arbitration Legislation.—A letter was received from the Director-General of Health advising that it was the desire of the Government that Boards observe the spirit of the recent Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration legislation and inquiring what steps had been taken or are proposed to be taken to give effect to the Government's wishes. Recommendation:—That the secretary b<r authorised to reply stating the action taken by this Board. Estimate 1937-38.—The Director-Gen-eral wrote suggesting that the estimated recoveries on account of patients fees be increased to an amount equal to the actual recoveries last year. The secretary amended the estimates by increasing the fees by £4OO and they recommended that the secretary’s action be confirmed. Vegetables supplied from Talbot Hospital Gardens: Recommendation:— That price for vegetable supplied to institution be increased from Id to lid per lb. Accounts as follows were passed for payment:—Genera! account, £4,100/9/-; Nurses’ Home loan account, £44/14/6; building loan, £2,676; total, £6,821/3/6. The report was adopted.
