CORONATION CELEBRATIONS On Coronation Day tlie school children paraded in the morning in costumes representing the various parts of the British Empire as follows: Britannia, Betty Hart; England, Nathie Smith; Ireland, Alleen Glassey; Wales, Doreen Pugh; Scotland, Crys Turple; Islands of the Sea, Norman Cague; New Zealand, Desmond McDuff; South Africa, Alan Cague; India, Jim Cronin; Australia, Ronald Smith; Canada, Jim Dempsey. The flag was saluted and the National Anthem sung. Lewis Coe, on behalf of the children, called for three cheers for the King and Queen, and Margaret Turpie led the cheers for Princess Margaret Rose and Princess Elizabeth. After a short address on the significance of the day and loyalty to their Majesties, souvenir cards issued by the Education Board and souvenir badges received from the Waimate County Council were presented to the children by the chairman of the School Committee, Mr J. R. Trimble. SOUTHBURN A very pleasing ceremony was held at the Southbum School to celebrate and commemorate the Coronation. The School Committee had arranged a sports programme for the children, also a tree-planting ceremony in which the Womens’ Division took part. The tree from the school was planted by one of the senior boys, Ted Papsey, and the one given by the Division by Mrs Chamberlain senr. Races of all descriptions were run and enjoyed by the children. A lucky spot competition for married women was won by Mrs Youdale, for single girls by Miss Bell and for married men by Mr Turner. Morning tea was provided, after which flags and certificates were presented to the children.
