THE PORT TAURANGA

NEW WATCHLIN MOTORSHIP Captain A. F. Watchlin’s new intercolonial cargo motorship Port Tauranga, reached Lyttelton last Sunday night on her maiden voyage from London. Specially designed for the timber trade between Australia and New Zealand, the Port Tauranga was built by Henry Robb, Ltd., Leith. A twinscrew motorship of about 1200 tons gross, with a deadweight carrying capacity of 1500 tons,, she is 235 ft in length, with a moulded breadth of 45ft. A handsome little vessel, she is of the one-deck type, with long forecastle and long poop decks, the engines being aft, with the navigating superstructure at the forward end of the poop deck. The plate-type stem is well raked forward, and. in combination with the generous flare of the forward sections and long forecastle, gives the vessel good seagoing qualities. The stern arrangements incorporate a cast-steel sternframe and a cruiser stem, while the rudder is of semi-balanced streamlined design.

The single cargo hold is 150 ft long, and is specially arranged for the carriage of long logs of timber. The single hatch opening is the largest in any vessel in the world, being 96ft in length, and will thus easily accommodate the 90ft. long tree trunks that have to be handled in the New Zealand and Australian timber trade. The hatch beams are of the “T and B” roller type, stow-

ed at the forward end of the hatch, when loading or discharging cargo, while the covering or uncovering of the hatch takes only three minutes. The deck machinery, of the steamdriven pattern, includes a combined anchor-handling and warping windlass on the forecastle, and a warping capstan aft. For handling timber cargoes there are two steel derrick booms, mounted one on each of the fore and main masts. The derricks, working in conjunction with steam-driven winches are each arranged for five-ton lifts on single wire, or 12 tons in purchase. The main engines are Atlas Polar two-stroke cycle, four-cylinder, trunkpiston, airless-injection Diesel units, developing 600 b.h.p. at 260 r.p.m. A very complete set of auxiliary machinery is also provided. The Port Tauranga, which was brought out by her owner, loaded a full cargo in London for discharge at Lyttelton, Wellingtin and Auckland, and came out via the Suez Canal.
