KUROW BRIDGES ALTERATIONS IN HAND Alterations to the HakatarameaKurow bridges involving the closing to traffic of the embankment between them is at present in progress, and should be completed within a week. Gates seven feet high are being erected on the intermediate embankment and traffic will be required to take the side road deviation between the bridges. The road is being put in order and the approaches to the bridges at each end of the deviation are being widened and graded. The county engineer (Mr W. P Black) explained yesterday that, before being taken over by the Highways Board, the bridges were used by the railway and thus for road traffic purposes are one-day bridges, but two cars are able to pass on the embankment between the bridges. Difficulty occurred at night, however, when motorists about to cross the bridge could not tell from the headlights of an approaching car whether it was actually on the bridge or beyond the embankment. It is held that the erection of the high gates on the embankment will obviate confusion by intercepting the beams of headlights between the bridges. In times of high flood the side road deviation is likely to be impassable. On these occasions the gates will be opened, allowing traffic to pass over the embankment. GORGE ROAD PROGRESS OF WORK Owing largely to the unfavourable weather experienced, the tar-sealing of the Gorge Road as far as Waihao Forks will not be completed this summer, as originally intended. The work of preparing the surface for sealing, however, will be proceeded with to permit of an early start next season. Up to the present the road has been prepared from Waihao Fox.’:s to the Arno deviation and a commencement has been made in the Gorge.
