PLEASANT POINT

AMENITIES WANTED RAISING OF FUNDS DISCUSSED Delegates from the Women’s Institute, Ex-Pupils’ Association and the newly formed Bowling Club attended a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of running a queen carnival. There were present—Mesdames Liston. Cunningham, Williams and Candy. Miss Macßean, Messrs Grant. Cartwright, Hammond, Crawford, Hewitt, and Oborn. Mr W. C. Grant was elected chairman and Mr A. J. Oborn secretary. Mr Hewitt, on behalf of the Bowling Club, said that with three queens working for three different objects—the Bowling Club for a bowling green, the Ex-Pupils for a swimming bath, and the Women’s Institute for a rest room—he was sure that sufficient money could not be raised to carry out all the objects successfully. With one object backed by the three organisations represented, a success for that one object was assured. He had given the matter serious consideration. The laying down of a bowling green was a necessity, together with a rest room, with which the bowling green and pavilion would be incorporated. He would move “That this meeting of delegates from the Women’s Institute, Ex-Pupils’ Association and Bowling Club close this meeting and form themselves into a general queen carnival committee, and that the funds derived from such carnival, with three queens, be used for the formation of a bowling green, croquet lawn and pavilion, to which would be incorporated a women’s rest room.”Mrs Liston, president of the Women’s Institute, said that they had attended the meeting with the thought that the proceeds from a carnival would lx? divided equally among the three organisations, but as Mr Hewitt’s motion embodied their objective, a women’s rest room, she was favourably inclined to support the motion. However, she would not commit her organisation to anything definite in the meantime, but she would be prepared to call a special meeting of her associates tc discuss the proposal. The other Women’s Institute members concurred in this view. Messrs Hammond and Crawford, representing the Ex-Pupils’ Association, spoke strongly against the motion, contending that as the motion was worded the Ex-Pupils’ Association was not going to benefit financially out of the carnival, and they were sure the Association would not counternance combluing with the other two organisations unless on a 33 1-3 per cent, basis. Considerable discussion ensued and a deadlock was reached. However, on the motion of Mr A. J. Oborn, it was decided that this meeting adjourn and that the Ex-Pupils’ Association and Women’s Institute call special meetings of their organisations for the purpose of discussing the situation that had arisen, and that Mr Hewitt attend both meetings and fully explain every detail outlined in his motion. PERSONAL Mrs South. Geraldine, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs M. Patrick. Mrs R. Halstead, who has been spending a holiday with Mrs Stan Jones, Hook, has returned home. Misses Nancy Price and D. Grylls, Waimate, are spending a holiday ermping at the Levels irrigation headworks.
