LEVELS COUNTY

RATES COME IN WELL Gratification that the rates had this year come in remarkably well was expressed by Mr T. B. Garrick, chairman of the Levels County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday. Up to March 1 rates collected for 1936-37 represented 94.44 per cent as against 93 per cent on March 31, 1936. Rates struck totalled £10,512/13/5. Up to March 1 £9928/5/11 had been collected leaving £584/7/6 outstanding. Present at the meeting were—Messrs T. B. Garrick (chairman), R. G. Cleland, Donald Grant, T. M. Brosnahan, J. E. P. Cameron and R. W. Munro. Reviewing the finances for the month the chairman said that the debit balance on January 27 was £6453/16/4. The amount expended during the month was £995/9/3. Receipts since last meeting totalled £9530/6/11, the chief stem being general rates £8370/6/11. After payment of accounts that day the debit balance would b“ £BB/19/6. Mr Garrick said that a canvasser was at present seeking signatures in regard to the Downlands water supply scheme and the response was fairly satisfactory. Some people apparently wanted water for their houses but not for their farms, and for that reason were not prepared to sign up. “Up to two or three days ago I was rather sanguine, but now I do not like it so well,” the chairman added. The engineer (Mr T. Black) was instructed to report on a request by Mr E. C. P. White for the provision of a light traffic bridge over the creek at the foot of the Hazleburn Hill. Attention was also called to a dip .in the Hazleburn Road, which Mr White said needed attention. A petition was forwarded by three ratepay- t asking that a bridge suitable for lorry traffic be erected over the creek near Mr J. Mowat’s entrance gate on the Castlerock Road. Totara Valley. It was e—eed that a bridge should be erected. The Washdyke Progress League wrote drawing attention to two patches of Californian thistle in the district. It was decided to give notice to the occupiers to clear the weed. The South Canterbury Motor-Cycle Club was granted the use of the Tycho Zig-Zag for its championship hill climb this week.
