Expressing thanks for the tributes paid to him at Otahuhu on his retirement, Mr F. K. Hunt, the Auckland magistrate, related .-. tale of a recent visit which he paid to the Auckland gaol, when a man working outsid the prison expressed his regret at Mr Hunt's forthcoming retirement. He praised the magistrate for his fairness and the sympathetic treatment he had always accorded to the prisoners, both in the court and out of it. He told of how the prisoners were always pleased to know Mr Hunt was to hear their grievances, and they always took his decisions with a good grace. In conclusion the prisoner wished Mr Hunt all the best of luck and prosperity in his retirement. Mr Hunt said he went on his way feeling quite pleased with himself and the world in general. On being admitted to the prison he had asked the warder the name of the man to whom he had been talking. The warder, who had observed the conversation, but was ignorant of the nature of the remarks, gave Mr Hunt’s complacency a severe jolt by remarking, “Oh, that’s so and so. But don’t believe anything he says. He’s the biggest liar in the whole gaol.”
