TECHNICAL SCHOOL

PARENTS’ DAY ■ The annual Parents’ Day of the Timaru Technical High Schol was held yesterday. In view of the comprehensive display which the school staged at the Winter Show, it was considered unnecessary to have another display of work, but parents and friends were permitted to inspect the class rooms where the pupils were at work. There was a good attendance of parents and friends, including members of the Farmers’ Union and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Great interest was taken in the practical classes—engineering, woodwork, cooking and woolclassing—and the high standard of work done did much to convince parents that their children were being taught in a thoroughly practical manner. In the course of the afternoon, the Principal announced that the cup which had been given for annual competition for handwork, to commemorate the jubilee of King George V., had been won this year by Ella Walter. The chairman of the Board of Managers (Mr G. Benstead) extended a welcome to the visitors. The work, he said, was a credit to the Principal, staff and pupils. Technical education was proving to be a wonderful success, and he could honestly say that over the years he had been associated with the Timaru Technical High School, he had never seen work of the class being done at present. Two important problems faced the school at present. One was the late arrival of pupils at the school, and the other was the lack of transportation facilities. Fortunately the sympathy of the Farmers’ Union had been enlised and concrete proposals for rectifying the position were before the Minister for Education. ‘Tt is always encouraging for us to see the interest parents are taking in our work,” said the Principal (Mr F. L. N. Tuck). The parents and friends of the school were welcome to inspect the work being done whenever they pleased and to see the interest taken was a source of gratification to the pupils. Afternoon tea was served on the grass and the girls entertained the visitors with folk dancing while a drill display was given by the boys.
